Home Invasion Too Close To Home

I woke up this morning to the sound of someone trying to break into my house. After a quick check out the window, I heard my front door open.
Great!!!!! Someone was in my house.
Now what? What do you do when you know someone is downstairs, in your home?
My husband grabbed the bat and headed down the stairs, and I called the Police.

I guess we scared them off. It seems they broke in at the back of the house. They broke the PVC window, cracked the window right out of it's frame, and entered the house. The noise I made scared them out the front door. But that does not change the fact that they were in our house.

We spent half the night with the police. The helicopter had a look around. The K9 unit dropped by to check out the scene. And it doesn't change the fact that someone was in our house.

How do you shake that feeling. You know the one. The feeling that you have been violated. The feeling that someone can just break a PVC window that was locked in place and enter your house. What do you have to do to ensure you are safe in your own home? Do you have to put bars on all the windows? Is locking the doors and windows not enough to keep these assholes out of your house? What gaul! They think they can just bust into any old house they feel like! I just fixed that window from the last incident. Now I have to lay out another couple hundred to fix the window again.
And now my husband and I both have bats beside the bed. Well, he has a bat and I have an axe handle. And they are right beside the bed. His within reach on his side of the bed, and mine within reach on my side.
We aren't sleeping tonight. Not after someone was in our house.

Not after someone was in our house.

  1. That's awful & scary. I'm sorry to hear that happened. Nobody should have to keep a bat beside their bed.

I read that an alarm, not necessarily monitored but just having the stickers on your window, can be a good deterrent. Exterior motion detector lights are a good idea too, if you don't already have those. I have one behind my house.

  2. May I suggest you call in a window installer to take a look at the kind of glass you have in your window. Triple pane is more expensive but extremely hard to break. It would take so long and be so loud that you would be standing behind them with your bat poised to strike before they got in. Talk to a reputable window co. Shop around. You don't have to get bars to be secure. But you can't put in cheap 1 or 2 paned plastic framed windows and expect that to keep out the trash. My husband works in the business and he will tell you that you "Get what you pay for" in windows. Or put in a grill. We put one on a back window of our last house after they used it to break in. They didn't get in again. Sorry about it though, it's bad enough when you are not home but when you are it is frightening.

  3. I am so sorry this happened. How terrifying!

Definitely look at getting a security/alarm system. It helps with peace of mind and, as cherenkov said, can help to work as a deterrent. We have Protelec and really like them. Please consider putting up the expense of getting an alarm for the safety of you and your husband, nevermind your home and possessions.

The criminal did not break the glass on the window. It is a triple pane $450.00 pvc window. They used a crow bar or something similar to break the casing at the bottom where the metal peg holds the window in place after ripping the screen out. The action also broke the pegs at the top of the sliding window that hold it in place. I woke to the noise of them prying the window out of its casing. And they were in my house without breaking any glass.
Action will be taken on my part to secure my home.

  5. Yikes! That is too close to home! Glad to hear you are both ok. It seems very odd that they would break in when someone was home - clearly not the brightest criminal minds at work.
